Funeral Service Compliance 101

Presented by: Michael Lanotte, NYSFDA Executive Director

This session will review the most frequently asked compliance questions to ensure funeral homes are providing legal and ethical service to their families.

Course Content:

  • Credit card fees: what can legally be passed on to consumers;
  • Advertising: what information must be displayed in print advertising;
  • Designation of intentions and preplans: what should be followed at the time of death;
  • Final disposition and the next-of-kin list: who has what authority;
  • HR issues: addressing pregnancy in the workplace and HR compliance;
  • Consumer preferences when it comes to funerals including cremation, choosing a funeral home, religion and non-traditional funerals;
  • Funeral service business outlooks including opportunities, challenges, concerns and goals;
  • Services available to assist funeral directors in meeting their business needs.


Michael A. Lanotte is the Executive Director for the NYS Funeral Directors Association. In this capacity, Mike serves in various roles within the organization including President of Funeral Director Support Services, Inc., which administers PrePlan, President of Directors Choice Credit Union and President of the New York State Tribute Foundation.

Prior to joining NYSFDA in June 2016, Mike spent 23 years at the New York Credit Union Association where he served as Senior Vice President of Association Services & General Counsel. In that role, he was responsible for the day to day operations of the association and the New York Credit Union Foundation. 

Mike received his Juris Doctorate degree from Albany Law School of Union University after graduating cum laude from Union College in Schenectady, NY.
