CUNY CONFERENCE ON "DEATH, BEREAVEMENT AND MOURNING"
Albany, New York -- September 12 -- James P. Nolan, Jr., newly-elected
president of the New York State Funeral Directors Association (NYSFDA),
was one of the presenters at CUNY's Conference on "Death, Bereavement
and Mourning" held September 10 and 11 at the Graduate Center
in New York City.
The conference, which was sponsored by the Harold M. Proshansky
Chair in Jewish
Studies and the New York State Funeral Directors Association, brought
together scholars
from a variety of disciplines to examine what we have learned about
how we deal with
death.
Among the subjects explored were the impact of terror on the ability
to cope with death;
creative aspects of public and private mourning; ritual resources
and bereavement and
grieving families.
Established in 1961, CUNY's Graduate Center has an enrollment of
about 3,500 students
in thirty-one doctoral programs. It draws its faculty of more than
1,600 members mainly
from the CUNY senior colleges and cultural and scientific institutions
throughout New
York City.
Founded in 1889, NYSFDA's mission is to promote the highest standards
of funeral
service to the public and to enhance the environment in which its
members operate. More than 800 member firms and 3000 licensed funeral
directors who operate across the state belong to the New York State
Funeral Directors Association. In addition to maintaining a Website
at www.nysfda.org, NYSFDA also publishes a newspaper column "Transitions"
and brochures which educate and inform consumers about end-of-life
issues.
